Wednesday, September 27th, 2006Here’s some numbers for ya:
- 6- The number of sick members of my household. Also coincidentally, the number of people in my family.
- 8- The number of days Ethan has been sick
- 3- The amount of days Mike has been out of work and the kid has been home from school
- 2- The amount of times I have gone to the emergency room in the past week. Also the number of different hospitals we have been to.
- 4- The number of prescriptions Lily is taking right now to alleviate her discomfort and congestion
- 2- The number of times Lily- who wasn’t supposed to be able to throw up after getting an operation called a fundoplication done because it tied off the top of her stomach with her esophagus- threw up on me this week.
- 6 – Number of baby eyeballs infected with pink eye in our home. Do you know how difficult it is to put eye drops in six angry baby eyeballs? How do they even clamp their eyes down that hard? What, do they retract into their brain??? Go out, find a really pissed off cat and put eyedrops in its eyes. That’s what it is like.
- 1- The number of times Jack pooped on me today
- 4300- The amount of dollars it cost to replace our 1 broken furnace (The repairman looked at it and shouted “Uh, we have a problem with your furnace. Something caught on fire and melted.”)
- 6.5- The number of times Mike and I have almost commited bodily harm to each other while being sick, tired and having no one else to help with the kids
- 1.9 billion- The number of outgrown baby clothes I am sorting, hanging on hangers (wire only! we don’t care that you hate wire hangers and always throw them out! buy some!) and neurotically tagging for a huge triplet family resale this Friday (Hey! Live in the St. Louis Metro Area? Want to go to a huge kids’ resale run by triplet families? Email me for info!)*
- 3- The maximum number of carmel apples I have eaten in one day.
- A Google- The amount I love my readers! (um, can you tell I ran out of things to list? I do love you though, you know that. And that shirt? Looks fabulous on you.)
(Did you know that when making a bulleted list, you are not supposed to end single statements with a period but if there is more than one sentence within your bullet, add a period after the individual statements. I used to work for the Marketing Business Writing Freak who would red ink your shit if you didn’t follow that rule. And then she would beat you.)
* Do you know a family that needs clothes for a premature baby? Email me. I would like to give the babies’ preemie clothes to someone in need.

7 yrs
Tuesday, September 26th, 2006Seven years ago, after being upside down in bed for a week, I gave birth to a five pound, two ounce baby boy who decided he wanted to arrive two months early. That’s my boy, always rushing into the world to find out what’s going on.
I had turned 25 seven days earlier and foolishly thought I was mature enough to be a mother on my own. I had the loving, steadfast support of my family but I didn’t have a partner to share in his birth or in the responsibility of a premature newborn. It was one of the hardest times in my life but the beginning of an incredibly joyous journey.
I fell in love with my son the moment I saw his beating heart on the ultrasound screen. The moment I met him, I was smitten. He had a shock of black hair, sticking up on all angles, and a chubby little face- defying his prematurity. One of the nurses said he looked like George Hamilton because of his tan complexion (tan, jaundice- whatever). He was a snuggly little guy from the beginning and always loved to be cradled in my arms.
Over the years, that baby has turned into one heck of a delightful kid. I am in awe of how smart he is becoming and how he is coming into his individuality. I feel lucky that I get to be his Mom. Last night, he had a bad dream and curled up against me while whimpering about some unseen monster. I patted his head and whispered that it would be alright because Momma’s here and I’ll keep him safe. Seven years later and he’s still my baby.
Happy Birthday buddy, I love you.

remember when sick days meant no work!?
Saturday, September 23rd, 2006everyone is sick. we’ve got the plague up in here and guess who is in charge of doling out medicine, wiping snot, changing pukey sheets, transporting to the ER & pediatrician and listening to moaning in the middle of the night? give up? ME!!
this is karma for me getting last weekend off. what was i thinking?
yesterday, mike called me from work gasping that it hurt to breathe and he needed a doctor. i rushed up to get him, took him to the ER where we waited for hours to find out what was wrong. the doctor walked in and said “well, it could be nothing or hey! could be a blood clot!” so they did chest x-rays, blood tests, admonished him greatly for smoking, finally gave him some pain medicine and let us wait and watch daytime television for hours. in the end, he was diagnosed with an inflamed chest wall which is probably related to the respiratory virus going around our house and his heavy smoking. there is nothing they could do about it except give him anti-inflammatories, pain medicine and another warning to quit the cigarettes. the doctor told him it would “hurt like hell for a few days” but he’ll be fine. soooo now i have a sick husband who is trying to quit smoking. surprisingly, he isn’t cranky, just a tad whiney.
lily got the sick last night and i’m worried she’ll end up in the hospital with pneumonia again. we got great news from her pulmonologist last week and i hate stepping back. she is allowed to be on room air with no additional oxygen and she has been doing great. when she first came home from the hospital at five months old, she had to be on a ventilator 12 hours per day and needed a lot of extra oxygen. seven months later, she only needs the vent for 8 hours at night and no additional oxygen (rooma air). her lungs are getting stronger, she has become much more resiliant and healthy. the doctor said if she can stay off oxygen for three consecutive months and we can wean her off her vent at night then he will say she doesn’t need the trach as far as her lungs are concerned. unfortunately, she has the trach for two reasons- her lungs and her scarred, narrow airway (due to being off and on a ventilator for months without a trach during the first 3 months of her life). she is a having another scope done on october 2nd to look at her airway and find out if it is still very narrow like it was six months ago. we’ll find out soon if she still needs the trach from the airway perspective. either way, they aren’t going to take it out in the winter because she is high risk for pneumonia, RSV (hey! if you don’t know what RSV is and you have an infant, google it and for god’s sake don’t take the kid out in public until they are older), and other illnesses that come on strong in the winter. if she gets any of these illnesses, she has to be on her ventilator and the only way to put someone on a vent at home is if they have a trach.
the point of this explanation is that i’m disappointed she is sick because we were moving forward and this is a set back. a minor set back but still a set back. but! if she can get through being sick without needing to go to the hospital, that is a good sign. some of you are new readers and may not be as familiar with the lily story. a lot of it is in the archives but feel free to ask if you have ?’s. she is a medically complicated child and sometimes i forget that not everyone is as familiar with pediatric pulmonology as i am (i get asked by doctors if i’m a nurse all the time. i just say “no, but i play one on t.v.” or “no, but i stayed at holiday inn last night”)
i gotta run- i hear some whining… wish me luck!

it’s genetic.
Friday, September 22nd, 2006tonight, the kid limped into the garage crying that he had shut his foot in the door. we consoled him and he walked off to go to the bathroom, sniffling the whole time. two minutes later, he walks down the hall crying loudly that he had shut his finger in the door. within five minutes, he shut two different body parts in the door. yep, that’s my boy.

laughing is good for you
Wednesday, September 20th, 2006A happier time, when both boys were laughing, before the great crabbiness of 2006 set in. Now we’re dealing with double pink-eye, an ear infection, a sinus infection and a serious case of put me down and i’m going to screamitis. They are on antibiotics and anti-pink eye drops so they are beginning to feel better but let’s just say this week has been a bit challenging.
Lately, this site has been all babies! all the time! but hey- when you have three of ‘em, what else are you going to discuss? Embrace the mommyblahg. You know you love it.
